Please have all orders in to Paula by Monday, December 20th. We will be freezing the budget during the holiday break, so this will give us time to get orders placed! If you need to know how much you have left, please ask Paula.

QUEST Sled Race

 QUEST staff,

The ground is not exactly covered with snow just yet but it’s never too early to get the kiddos fired up about one of our long standing traditions, the sled race!

The sled race will be held on Friday, January 21st  at 9:30.

A few of you have reached out regarding the dimension requirements for this year. See document below for this year’s guidelines.

Our goal is to make it an enjoyable experience for all and the amount of time and effort put into building a sled is entirely up to the teacher. The tech room will be fully stocked after break and I will have a sign-up sheet hanging outside of the tech room for the 3 weeks leading up to the event. Please remind your students that they can bring in materials from home if they wish but the construction of the sleds has to take place in school. Parents are welcome to come in and assist your classes in the tech room but please make sure they are not in the tech room without a teacher in there as well. If you have items that need to be cut but you run out of time during the school day, have your students bring them to me and I can cut them before or after school.

Please, do not let your student spray paint their sleds on the sidewalk outside of the tech room!!!!!

 For Primary Classes below

I will be providing sled kits to the Primary classes again this year. Please let me know if you are a primary class and would like a kit. These kits will consist of:

-1 piece of plywood to be used as the sled base

- 2 plexi-glass runners (skis)

-2 wooden risers that connect the runners to the sled base.

As a class you can simply discuss the design you want your sled base to look like and I will cut them for you. You will then assemble the 3 items into a sled using liquid nail (will be provided to you) and you can then paint them as a class and make them look amazing!

If we have a very cold day, we plan to have the event streaming in the auditorium this year. If  we have any individuals that wish to watch it but its too cold for them, the auditorium is an option.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Thanks!

Weekly Update

Team,

There is no video message this week.

Need-to-know:

  • Great work with the evacuation. In the event that you are assigned to a class that is not "your" assigned class, and we are in a location other than the classroom you work in, please bring the roster with you. This will help with attendance.
  • Fire Inspection on the 15th. We will be getting a list soon of corrections we need to make prior to the 15th, and Mike will be coming around to let you know if it pertains to your space. Please know he is not intentionally trying to be the Grinch that stole Christmas! We appreciate your hard work, Mike!
  • On 12/23 we will have a modified special schedule day.  If you typically have a double special on that day, coverage will be provided to give you the additional twenty minutes (the additional twenty minute time slot will be shared when we are closer to the day). Special areas are ending the dance planner with fun and celebration--kudos! 9-10 North Pole classes: Yensan, B. Jones, C. Jones, Firkins, Lippincott, Gibbs, Tracey     10:15-11:15  Equator classes: DiBattisto, Langswager, Monfiletto, PJ, Elias, Moore, Francesca, Velyk   1:20-2:20 South Pole classes: Strecker, Stanford, Tomszak, Booth, Pierri, Carpenter, Butlin
  • Joy Shop is next Thursday and Friday.
  • SIT is challenging all of us to cross-school connection. Near the mailboxes you will find cards. Fill one out for a colleague that you don't typically connect with. Once you have done that, add your name in the box EACH time you write a card. At the end of the month we will select a winner who will win $50 to spend on classroom goodies.
  • We have a variety of morning procedures, and some poles are meetings once a week, some twice. We are not doing a school-wide meetings. Because of this, we have not had a consistent process as a school for saying the pledge. If you do not already do so, please be sure you are adding a class-wide pledge to your morning procedures.

Erin's Law

 Team,

We will begin our lessons with Miss Tippy in February. The schedule has been placed in the schedules folder on the top of the blog and can also be viewed below. Reach out if you see a big conflict. The following is included on the parent blog.

Dear Hilton Parent/Guardian,

In the past several years, many states including NY, have passed Erin's Law with the intent of increasing the awareness of child abuse. In Hilton, our elementary schools will continue to work with Community Educators from Bivona Child Advocacy Center to help us deliver the Monique Burr Foundation (MBF) Child Safety Matters™ program from the Monique Burr Foundation for Children. The program consists of two age-appropriate lessons to help children spot and respond to child abuse (physical, sexual and neglect), bullying and digital dangers. Most importantly, it teaches that adults are responsible for children’s safety. The program is based on the latest research and has been reviewed and endorsed by national experts.

What exactly is covered in the lessons? MBF Child Safety Matters covers personal safety, all types of child abuse, digital abuse, bullying, cyberbullying and other digital dangers. The lessons focus on teaching children to rely on safe adults for support. Lessons are taught using age-appropriate and child-friendly language, fun games, and activities. Take-home items are provided as reminders of the lessons. At K-6, these lessons will be delivered by Bivona Child Advocacy Center Community Educators in February.

How are Hilton parents involved? We value the ongoing partnership that we share with our families.  Please consider joining us at the Child Safety Parent Overview webinar on Tuesday, January 4th at 6pm. You should register in advance for this webinar using this link:

https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_60k6j8N1RsGkovMa0nRfeQ

The recording of this webinar will be posted to the HSCD website in the following days for those families unable to attend live.  Additionally, each lesson in the program includes materials to read and activities for parents to do with their children.

We look forward to this partnership with Bivona, HCSD staff, and HCSD elementary families to foster a safe and positive learning environment for our children.

Sincerely,

Derek Warren

Great Read!

From Andrea: Skills are BUILT not BORN

Friendliness is a skill.
Public speaking is a skill.
Math is a skill.
Bowling. Leadership. Grit.
Skill. Skill. Skill.

The idea that we are in control our abilities is empowering to some and is the driving force behind every great learner.

To others, not so much.

Wrestling with the notion that our abilities (or lack thereof) are in our control can be unsettling, so many of us choose to hide behind stories.

Picture Day

Picture Day is Thursday, October 14th!

In your mailbox today, you'll have order forms to send home with the students and the picture cards that the students will give the photographer when they get their pictures taken (hang on to those slips of paper). Staff also has the slips of paper to bring on picture day. Leave them somewhere safe in your room. If you don't have those on picture day (or you weren't give one before), you'll still be able to go get your picture taken. Staff can have their pictures taken between 8:30-9:00 on picture day.

Pictures will be done in the Board of Ed. Room this year. Your class will be lined up in the hall while they wait for their pictures.

Sign ups for picture day slots are now open, and can be found in the Sign Ups tab on the top of this blog. Once you open the tab, check the bottom tabs for the Picture Day sign up.

Need-to-knows

  • Spirit week is next week. Show your QUEST pride!

  • If you have a classroom with students that get breakfast, please use one of two options: -have students go down in the line per usual. -have a class rep., or older student, go down with the roster to pick up the meals. If you have a student with allergies they will still need to go down on their own.
  • We had an evacuation drill canceled due to the weather. Please be sure you are prepared as we will have more unannounced drills next week.
  • If you are a non-classroom teacher, please be sure you share when you will be doing your Info. Night. Please refer to the email I shared yesterday with the options of delivery.

Back-to-School

A few need-to-knows as we return:

  • We will meet as a staff at 10:30 am on September 7th (or whenever we return from HS). Please join me in the auditorium.
  • In the afternoon on the 7th, you will have one hour of time slotted for working on your Global Compliance Trainings. You are more than welcome to use other times, however, we are required this year to provide time and this is the time that we are providing. In addition, we will provide the first level meeting time as well.
  • Just a reminder: drop-off will enter the building around 8:40, buses will be rolling in a few minutes after that this year (more like 8:45).
  • Just a reminder: parent pickup will begin at 3:25. Please make sure kids are walking toward the auditorium at that time. K and bus duty will be 3:30, all others at 3:35.
  • We have the Center for Youth working with us this year. Jason, our point person, will be working alongside Jason Cring in the computer lab. This room will serve as a restoration room where all behaviors and student behavioral supports will be provided. More to come in the future!
  • We will have a school-wide assembly outside in the back on the first day of school. Nothing crazy, just a chance to all come together and to welcome back our learners. This is scheduled to begin at 10 am. It will be quick.
  • Looking ahead, our Information Night will be virtual this year. This will be shared with parents in September. Conferences, however, will be in -person, but feel free to also allow parents a virtual option for a conference if they are not comfortable coming inside the building.

Back to school check-list:

  • I have a copy of my roster(s).
  • I signed up for any committee I'm interested in being on.
  • I have emergency sub plans ready to go. In addition, I have included Emergency Procedures for my work space within those plans.
  • I have a red and green card for evacuation drills.
  • For classroom teachers: I'm aware of where my students will be eating lunch.
  • I have viewed the schedules for bus duty and meetings found on the top of the blog, or HERE .
  • I have submitted my schedule to the main office.
  • Classroom teachers: I have my literacy profiles.
  • My room is ready to roll--students are able to sit three feet apart.
  • I have re-anchored into my why. I'm ready to make a difference.

Lunches

I am sure hearing that lunches were no longer in classrooms was met with great approval! I get it!

In order to space out effectively, we will be using three spaces: cafe, stage, auditorium floor. Below you will find your classes location and some other details.

A few need-to-knows:

  • All buying will go right through the line, then to their seat.
  • Please use the same form for lunch ordering as last year: FORM IS HERE OR THE TOP OF THE BLOG
  • On the first day, the seat your students sit in will become assigned seats for the first five weeks. Every five weeks we will allow students to shift seats for a new assigned seats. This supports contact tracing should that be needed. If you feel the need to have students separated, please communicate with the lunch monitor assigned to your location.
  • Jason, from the Center for Youth, will be working alongside the cafeteria staff to support lunch behavior. When needed, students will have immediate consequences and breaks during lunch. The Center for Youth and I  will support the cafeteria staff with this when needed.
Where do we enter?
  • If your class is on the stage, they should go through the lunch line and use the stage door closest to the security desk to enter the stage.
  • If your class is in the cafe, they should enter through the door near the food pick-up line.
  • If your class is in the auditorium, they should get their food and enter through the door in the UPK/Dave Inzana hall. The door is across from the bathrooms (green steps).
  • The monitor will communicate where pick-up will occur for your class.

Some rules for students:
  • Students will stay in their seat the entire time. They can throw out their lunch when the class lines up to be picked up.
  • If a bathroom is needed, students will raise their hand and get permission.
  • Students will stay in their assigned seat for five weeks at a time.

3-6, Mark Your Cal.

Attention ELA (grades 3-12) and Math (grades 3-8) teachers administering NWEA MAP ELA and MATH Assessment…all others disregard.

All students in grades 3-12 ELA will be given NWEA MAP (Lexile) assessment three (3) times this year.  In addition, all students in grades 3-8 math will be given the NWEA MAP assessment three (3) times this year.

Students are able to take both these assessments on their Chrome Books. Please note the following timeframe that the assessments MUST be given. We know that these dates are a little later than we have in the past. The reason for this is we want to be able to give students time to settle in and reduce the impact of summer slide and COVID slide on the data we receive from these assessments.

Both the ELA LEXILE and the Math MAP will be given during the same timeframe…please do not administer these assessments outside the testing window. The consistency ensures these assessments are common and is critical to the data analysis process. In addition, these dates are important so that we can upload the results to Infinite Campus.

NOTE MW: Merton Williams teachers, please work with your team to make sure you determine when you are giving the ELA assessment and when you are giving the math assessment. This is important so as to avoid the technology issue that can occur when two different assessments are given at the same time.

Mid-summer Updates!

Team,

I hope this message finds you with your feet up somewhere, enjoying all the relaxation you can squeeze in. Summer has been quiet and enjoyable here at QUEST, but we look forward to having the team and students all back come fall. In less than a month we will begin the 181 day process--adventure--of impacting kids...together!

Below you will find some important updates, as well as information pertaining to summer day. Please look through carefully and reach out if you have any questions.

Focus for 21-22

It was once said that when you have too many focuses, you really do not focus on anything at all. As we look toward the 21-22 school year, a few central focus areas for the district, and ultimately our school,  pop out:

  • Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity: We will dive deep into the CRE framework and look at best practices that promote a school--and classrooms--where every student, every day means EVERY student, EVERY day.
  • RtI: We will try to move the needle with RtI systems and pick-up where we left off pre-pandemic. Keep in mind that RtI does not simply mean RtI meetings, but rather the practices and systems that grow all students.
  • Culture/Climate: We will all work to do our part to build a positive culture at QUEST--one in which we walk in others' shoes.

Summer Day

Summer day is set for August 25th starting at 9:30 in the auditorium. Not a problem if you can't make this day--please just remember to let Derek know what other day you will be in to complete your summer day to-do list.

The Ice Cream social will be that evening from 6-7. Parents will be allowed to pop in the building to drop off supplies, but only if they have a mask on.

The link below will take you to our agenda for that day.

SUMMER DAY AGENDA

Need-to-Know

  • Students who walk or get dropped off by parents will be entering the building at 8:40, which has been our usual start time; however, students taking buses will enter at 8:45 (or a minute or two earlier as buses trickle in). The high school needed to shift a procedure in the morning, and all elementary schools will now have buses drop off five minutes later than in the past. With that, dismissal for daily pick-up will be at 3:25 for this year (unless we get a last minute surge in pick-up requests and need more time), bus duty and K dismissal at 3:30, and the rest of the school at 3:35 (same as last year).
  • Mrs. O'Connell-Byrne will no longer be joining QUEST as she will be supporting VE next year.
  •  Please join me in welcoming: Tara Delvecchio (Health-Aide); Lisa Scottow (Library); Lance Trott (Psychologist); Kristin Tomczak (Duffy LTS)
  • We have an opening for the math center TA that is currently posted.
  • Liz T. and I are in the process of hiring a nurse.
  • Chris Steger will be with us full-time for the next three years as we have increased math center to 1.0.
  • QUEST will have a "Learning Lab" TA , .5. This person will work out of the library and will be there to support RtI plans and more individualized learning needs that pop up in the areas of ELA, Math, and executive functioning skills. We are in process for hiring for this position.
  • The Center for Youth (CFY) will officially be joining us this year. They will work out of the current computer lab, and will be there to support student behavior in a proactive, "teaching first" way. We will be working collaboratively to develop processes and procedures regarding how we work alongside the CFY. More to come.
  • The guidance from the state has been released and aligns with the CDC guidance. I have a meeting on Monday afternoon, so more information on building-wide procedures will be coming.

In closing, I hope the remaining weeks provide you with plenty of time to knock an item or two off your bucket list. What a gift that we have a career where we hit a pause button each year, affording us a chance to recharge and come back ready to get reacquainted with our why. Until then, rest, recharge, and read a good book. We will see you soon!

Be well,

Derek

End of Year Fun

We had our Student Council meeting last week and voted on a virtual talent show to end the year!  We wanted the kids to all be able to participate in something, and having it be virtual will also allow it to be safe. The Flipgrid link is below. Feel free to share with your families/students via electronic communication. This will be open the whole month of June.

Also, the last two half days(June 23/24) were voted as spirit days to wear Hilton/QUEST gear and sunglasses, “Because our future is bright J”.

Let us know if you have any questions,

Val and Emily

Grad Walk, Friday, June 11

Grad Walk is happening this year! Our seniors are excited to walk through the elementary schools and show our youngest learners about hard work and dedication! This year, grad walk will start right around 11:00 ( an announcement will be made when they are arriving). If your class could exit the building the way you would a fire drill and sit around the outside of the building. WE will have the seniors exit the buses in the bus loop, and walk around our building until they have circled the whole building and then they will get back on the buses. We know that this can impact lunches, just have the students eating outside while this is happening. Thanks for being flexible!

Heads up

 Hi,

Effective June 24, 2021, the Realize Reader iPadOS, Chrome and Windows apps will be retired.

As a result, accessing Realize Reader will be even easier! The web experience of launching Realize Reader eText content from the Realize platform will remain unchanged. Should students prefer to access Realize Reader offline, they can expect some navigational changes. The new Realize Reader app will be browser based and does not require installation from the Chrome, Windows, or Apple web stores. This will make it very easy for students to download the web application, and eliminate the need for administrators to provision the app centrally.

If students have any data in their current Realize Reader apps (in offline mode), we encourage them to go back online to ensure all their data is synchronized for later use. Please refer to the FAQ Help Page for further details.

Thank you,

Savvas Realize Team
