From Andrea and Val-

This went out to families today. Please encourage your kids to post their families' pictures!

Hello Families!

Tomorrow, December 19th, concludes QUEST's 25 Days of Joy! We hope we inspired many of you to take action and make the lives better of those surrounding us. If your family participated, please post your photos(s) here to the "QUEST 25 Days of Joy Padlet" OR email them directly to Andrea Geglia or Val McCormick. This could be a photo of your family donating your Box of Bounty or participating in any other kind deed along the way. We want to celebrate your family's participation!

Thank you for your support and for taking the time to give to our community. We Are QUEST!

Sincerely,

Andrea Geglia and Valerie McCormick

Agency in the Time of COVID

QUEST! Here is a nugget of wisdom to support your empowerment of student choice, voice and ownership.

Click here to read a post from the "Making Good Humans" blog entitled, "Agency in the Time of COVID." The message is strong and relevant.

Some highlighted parts that I personally loved:

"We need to respect that they (like all of us) have gone through change, uncertainty, and potentially loss and trauma. Now more than ever we must see them as whole human beings – not partially complete adults-in-the-making."

"No Secret Teacher Business... Make the "why" transparent."

"Stay critical about what's worth learning."

"Plan in response to learning... So although it can be difficult to let go of those perfectly laid out curriculum maps and long range plans and unit designs… we might find that this year, getting to know our learners and their families first, then involving them in decision-making and planning and always going one step at a time might be a more fruitful approach.

Enjoy! 😁💡🌏

Social Media and our students...

Team,

I was recently reminded about being careful with what is retweeted or shared out on social media—we had communicated with parents via multiple forums about masks AND six feet, and at times there has been communication (pictures) out there as a district where that is not occurring. We are being thoughtful with it as a school, but this is a general reminder that I wanted to pass along.

Right now, we are still six feet and social distancing, but please keep this in mind when sharing out celebrations with pictures. We are doing a great job as a school with social distancing, however, I know how hyper-critical people can be given the current state of Covid.

I have received ZERO complaints so far from families about this topic, but because this was shared with me from the district level I wanted us to remain vigilant as well.

Thank you!

Derek

FEAST meal 20-21

 Team,

As you can imagine, FEAST will be quite different this year. We have some classrooms working on virtual presentation options, but one shift is that Food Service will be providing a turkey, feast style meal on November 19th and 20th. They will provide it all, and we will follow the lunch schedule for that day--monitors will still provide regular coverage. Unfortunately, we will not be cooking and eating all as one like year's past, however, this will be a free meal that all students can get on the day they are in (Cohort 1 or 2). If an adult wants this lunch as well, they would need to pay $4.10

Thanks so much to Mrs. Stanford for organizing the sign-up for us!

Please follow the directions below to order the lunch for your students:

Family Goal Form for CLASSROOM TEACHERS

Here is the link for a Family Goal Form that you can use to document family support at home. It's not a contract or a binding document, but QUEST prides itself on this 3-way relationship with student-teacher-families. This may be a simple way for you to electronically gather that information and for parents to focus in on the supports they provide their child for educational success. Thanks to the Kindergarten Team for coming up with this great idea!

**You will need to "make a copy" of the form (and rename it with your name) before sending it to parents in order to gather your OWN data. Otherwise, all the info we gather will be produced as a school-wide .csv file and you'll have to sift through many rows of data to check out parent responses.

Oh no, I’m having tech issues, now what?

I’ve seen several students have problems accessing websites, work not appearing in Kami, or unable to view things that everyone else in the class could access.  If this happens try the following things with your student.  I’m also more than happy to meet with you and your student to help resolve the issue.  If I’m not in the building, just email me and we can meet via Zoom.

  1.  Many issues can also be fixed and prevented by completely shutting the Chromebook down at least once per day.  Best practice is to shut it down completely when leaving school and again after using it at home.  Closing the lid only puts it in sleep mode.  A complete shutdown is done by clicking the menu in the bottom with the time and wifi icon, then selecting the power button. Shutting down and restarting will apply any pending Chrome updates.

  2. All district Chromebooks need to be Authenticated against our web filter to work properly. This authentication needs to take place Every 8 hours. If you login at 8:00am, you will need to re-authenticate at 4:00pm.Any time your network address changes. If you are traveling between school or Daycare or McDonalds, etc. and home you will need to re-authenticate. You can (re)authenticate by opening a new tab, Click HCSD Bookmarks on the bookmark bar, Click Web Authentication. You will automatically authenticate when logging into the Chromebook, so an alternative would be to log out and back in, or restart.

  3. Most Chromebook software issues can be addressed by clearing your cache and advanced history. Follow this link to a document that explains the process.

Global Compliance

New York State Law requires school districts to provide annual training for Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazard Communication (Right-To-Know), Sexual Harassment and Dignity for All Students Act/Code of Conduct - NY.  As we have done in the past, the District is using the Global Compliance Network (GCN) on-line tutorials for the 2020-2021 trainings.  The District’s Sexual Harassment policy #6121 link is below for your reference.

https://www.hilton.k12.ny.us/policies.cfm?pid=511

All employees must complete these required tutorials by October 31, 2020 to remain in compliance.  The four (4) required trainings that must be completed are:

·         Bloodborne Pathogens;

·         Dignity for All Students Act/Code of Conduct – NY;

·         Hazard Communication (Right-To-Know); and

·         Sexual Harassment NY – State Approved.

Please contact Kristina Clemmo (ext. 7001) or Debbie Palmeri (ext. 7015) if you need further assistance with the website.

Rumble with Stress

We all have stress. No matter our role, we all feel stress and are forced to rumble with it. There is little we can do to avoid stress, as the emotions we feel are the response our bodies create to a stimulus. And it is interesting to observe the way we all react to stress. Some of us fight. Some of us cry. Some share it with everyone. Some keep it inside and retreat. Some carry on like there is not a care in the world--you watch them and wonder how they always stay so cool, calm, and collected. No matter how we each respond to stress, the one common denominator is that we all face it. Not only do we all face it, but our stress response can impact those around us. This year, there is no doubt that we are all facing professional stress, and our response to this stress will be what matters most.

But what is stress? Why does it exist and what can it teach us? Is it bad? Is it ALL bad? What are productive ways to navigate stress? How can we help others with their stress, without making their problems our own.

I enjoyed this TED talk and feel as though you might as well. Have a stress free weekend!

Reminders

  • Thanks for your work with reading the mindful teams article. I've already heard of some teams finding ways to develop mindful meetings. Love this. We impact one another, so let's make sure we are taking care of one another.
  • Management team meets next Tuesday and will have lots of updates to share out to you. Please be sure to stay tuned.

Don't forget about our friendly neighborhood print shop :)

I checked in with the print shop to get current turnaround times for you guys.

Black and white jobs are 2 - 3 days. Most jobs that are less than 300 copies are 2 days. Jobs that need cardstock covers, 2 staples on the left, etc. are more like 3 days.

Color copies do typically take and additional day to complete, about 3-4 days.

Wednesday Staff Meeting Time

Team,

This week, you will meet with levels again. I have two items that I want you to discuss, and then you are free to control the agenda:

  1. Read the article: CLICK HERE FOR ARTICLE After reading, discuss: What does it mean to be a mindful team? What from the article resonated? What road blocks do teams face that prevent collective mindfulness? How might a team overcome these road blocks? This does not need to be turned in, however, please start your meeting with the article and quick discussion.
  2. As a team, go around and share what Information Night will look like for you. Please share what each person is doing in the team notes.

Reminder about Wednesday:
This Wednesday, PM, is a consultation day. That is a professional day for you, designed by you, with no interference from me. You can use the time for any professional, work related purpose that you see fit.

FYI- The Lunch Choice form will now have a new column for students who only need to buy a milk.

Penny

Penny has some free time each am at 8 am until about 8:35 am. She is here to support the building at that time. If you have copying, want something done, please reach out directly to her. She is here to support and has a giving spirit. Send any requests her way.

Sparking the Magic

Last night, one of my daughters and I concluded our night with 15 minutes worth of television prior to starting our bedtime routine. She grabbed the remote, and immediately went to YouTube. YouTube is not allowed in the Warren household unless it is Saturday, as so much of what our children try to consume on there is mindless and consumer driven. I looked at her skeptically, but then sat back and watched her a bit longer before doing the fatherly redirection.

In this moment, my daughter went into YouTube and started searching for wild fires out west. This wasn't prompted, this was not an assignment, just a curious "itch" she had that needed to be scratched. With a simple search, she found a plethora of videos and clips, and together we extended our TV time a good 10 minutes; all the while, she was consuming new learning, and ultimately building new schema. She made connections, asked questions, made inferences...learning was happening.

This is magic. This moment was triggered because she has been taking part in a realistic fiction read aloud that focuses on the fires, and as a result she is more curious. This, in my eyes, was an example of that magic we discussed on the opening day.

The first two days of the school year, I went home a bit giddy--all the work we all put in finally felt worth it when those kids came.  Our school can be over-achievers, perfectionists, and can sometimes be our own worst enemy because of this...we place the bar pretty high on ourselves. But through a pandemic, we are creating learning. We are being progressive. We are innovating. We are finding new solutions to new problems. I have been amazed.

You all rise to the occasion--sometimes we do so kicking and screaming, but we still rise. And when we rise, we go head and shoulders above the rest. I'm so proud of you, and I am so proud of the work we are doing. Here's to keeping the magic going!

Have a restful weekend. We have earned it.

Mail Delivery Modification

 Team,

Have you ever put a work system in place only to find that it is too much? Same here. The office team has decided that mail delivery is more than we can chew right now.

With that being said, if you still want your mail delivered to you, please email Hannah and we will have someone deliver a couple times a week. If you are comfortable getting the mail yourself, instead, please follow the following protocol:

  • Grab mail no more than once a day (to minimize visits)
  • Sanitize hands before grabbing mail
  • We will sanitize our hands before filing mail

Any questions, please send my way. Thanks for your flexibility!

Reminders

  • Sometimes tech. tools take a bit of time to be activated. These companies have to agree to EdLaw 2d prior to us purchasing--if a new vendor. So please keep this in mind when requesting a new tech. tool purchase.
  • Did you know that hand sanitizers can sometimes contain nuts? If you have a student with allergies, please be aware of this, especially given some kids are bringing in random sanitizers from home. Most will not, but we should be aware of the ingredients.
  • Windows should be opened daily, unless it has the "Rescue Window" sticker on it. Please keep rescue windows closed.
  • Techs are currently slammed and are moving as fast as they can. Please submit a School Dude ticket versus just contacting them directly when you have a tech. issue. Remote parents also can call the help line.
  • We have an attendance email address: questattendance@hilton.k12.ny.us. If a parent emails you that they will be picking their child up, please pass this email address along to them.

Restorative Practices Workshop Follow-up

Dear Hilton teachers and staff,

Thank you so much for participating in PiRI’s Overview of Restorative Practices workshop last week! We know that you are busy with the start of the new school year, so we appreciate you taking time to be with us.

We would love your feedback so that we can continue to make our trainings meaningful for you. If you could take a moment to fill out an evaluation form, it would be really helpful for your training team.

Please let us know if you have any questions about your training or would like to get more involved with PiRI’s work with schools and in the community.

Kind thanks,

Rohan

From Office of Instruction

Here is the process teachers should follow if a student is out sick…this is aligned to what we have done in the past when I student was out. Prior to our current situation, the teacher would provide the work….in extended absences the teacher would provide the work to the tutor. In this case, the teacher would put the work in the Google Classroom.

·         Provide work for the student via Google Classroom

·         Teacher discretion if they want to allow the student to zoom into the class.

Schedules

 Team,

I'd like to have each schedule by Monday, September 21. Please email to Hannah so we can print out. Be sure to include times you will do mask breaks.

If you need more time due to the wackiness of your work, just let me know.

Thanks,

Derek

The library phone is not working. Please contact Mrs. Harney at extension 6145.

First full-week

 Team,

I hope you did the things that help you recharge over the weekend, and you are ready for the first full week. As we move through this new normal, be sure you are forgiving of yourself if things aren't perfect, and take plenty of time for you. You deserve it.

Have a great week!

Derek

Reminders

  • Is it an A day, B day, E day?? Wondering that? The schedule for that can be found on the blog. If you go to Q(Shares) Schedule (at the top), you will then see 20-21. Click on that, and the document is called 20-21 Special Days.
  • Sharon shared out the bus slot numbers on Friday. We apologize those weren't out sooner. If it is 8:40 and a bus is not there, please leave any student in a socially distanced line at the slot number (on the grass). The bus duty staff will supervise these kids and ensure social distancing.
  • We are waiting on our Isolation Supervisors to be fitted for their N95 masks. Until then, I will be spending much of my time outside that room as it is required to be manned at all times. Just a heads up if you do not see me in the other halls as much as normal.
  • Please be sure students that are pick-up are ready to go and walking down right at the 3:20 announcement. The process of giving children to their parents took about 10-15 minutes longer because some students did not make it down at the needed time. Thanks for your help with this. We will make the announcement at 3:20 for them to be dismissed and to begin walking down, however, let us know if you have some kids that need an escort to hurry them along.

Need-to-Know

This week we begin our Wednesday at home days. Per the agreed upon MOA, this day includes:

With that being said, I am not requiring a staff meeting every single Wednesday and we will keep a similar expectation with staff meeting amounts as we had last year: 1-2 per month, and no meeting weeks during busy reporting out seasons.

For this week, please use the staff meeting time for the following:

Levels: Please Zoom as a group and sign-up for committees, set Zoom team meeting norms (please consider a norm distracted behaviors like texting/doing other work during Zoom meetings), and begin unpacking what is going well for you and what issues are you facing with live instruction that you can problem solve together. Please post your norms on the team meeting notes.

Specialists: Please Zoom as a group and sign-up for committees, set Zoom team meeting norms (please consider distracted behaviors like texting/doing other work during meetings), and spend time finalizing schedules and reviewing as a group. Please post your norms on the team meeting notes.

Special Area: Touch base with your PC to see if you have a department meeting. If not, please Zoom as a group and signup for committees, set Zoom team meeting norms (please consider distracted behaviors like texting/doing other work during meetings), and begin unpacking what is going well for you and what issues are you facing with live instruction that you can problem solve together. Please post your norms on the team meeting notes.

Lisa/Val/Derek: Please Zoom and have first CAP meeting, and being constructing what RtI can look like remotely. Please create an RtI flow-chart so teachers understand the process for this year.

PD Time:

If there is something during this time, it would come from Karen or Barb.

Instructional Staff: Attention Needed

Google Classroom Codes

And

Substitute Plans

Hi,

As we work our way through this week, there have been a few things that have come up. One issue is gathering of Google Classroom Codes, and the other issue is Substitute Plans. In an effort to streamline processes, if you could take care of both of these during these Superintendent Conference Days I would appreciate it.

GOOGLE CLASSROOM CODES—Fill out the form  for each Google Classroom you have

It is important that we have a list of Google Classroom Codes. This will be very helpful for when someone is out and needs a sub. If you could fill out the Google Form below we will then be able to generate a list of all the codes.

Elementary Classroom Teachers

·        Fill out the form and specify the grade level you teach

·        Do not use the word grade..just the number. For example, do not write Grade 2…just put in 2

·        If you have two Google Classrooms…one for each COHORT, you need to fill out two forms. There is a drop down for you to specify the COHORT

·        If you have one Google Classroom..the same for both COHORTS, you only need to fill the form out once.

·        So…you will be filling this form out either once or twice…depending on if you have COHORT Google Classrooms

Secondary Classroom Teachers

·        Fill out the form for each section you teach

·        Specify the Course Name…For example Living Environment

·        Specify the section/ period. Do not use the word period…just the number. For example do not write Period 2…just put in 2

·        If you have two Google Classrooms per period… one for each COHORT for that period, you need to fill out two forms for that period. There is a drop down for you to specify the COHORT

·        If you have one Google Classroom per period…the same for both COHORTS per period,  you only need to fill the form out once for each period.

·        So….you will be filling this form out either 5 times or 10 times…depending on the if you have COHORT Google Classrooms per period

Special Areas

·        Fill out the form for each section you teach---one for each Google Classroom you have

·        Specify the Course Name…For example PE

·        Specify the grade level. Do not use the word period…just the number. For example do not write Grade 2…just put in 2

·        If you have two Google Classrooms per grade level … one for each COHORT for that grade level, you need to fill out two forms for that grade level. There is a drop down for you to specify the COHORT

·        If you have one Google Classroom per grade level…..the same for both COHORTS per grade levels,  you only need to fill the form out once for each grade level.

·        So….you will be filling this form out depending on how many Google Classrooms you have.

Special Education, AIS, and Related Services—for YOUR Google Classroom (if you have one)…not the Google Classroom where you are a co-teacher with a Classroom or Special Areas teacher.

·        Fill out the form for each Google Classrooms that you have

·        In your Google Classroom you will want to include your schedule…who you work with, etc….This will be helpful if you are out

LINK:

https://forms.gle/98CTz7MHnZgH1G3x9

SUBSTITUTE PLANS

·        Everyone should have TWO (2) days of emergency substitute plans.

·        Please make sure you put these substitute plans in your GOOGLE CLASSROOM(S), and label it Substitute Emergency Plans

·        Please assign one of your colleagues as a co-teacher of your GOOGLE CLASSROOM(S) so that they access your GOOGLE CLASSROOM if you are out.

·        If you are out and you can submit substitute plans for the day you are out, please submit them to your GOOGLE CLASSROOM and label it with the date and substitute plans. For example, October 15 Substitute Plans.

·        If you are out and you can’t submit substitute plans for the day, the substitute will then access your emergency substitute plans.

·        As a grade level and/or department, you can share emergency substitute plans. For example, there might be some skills that you want students to work on and these can be your emergency substitute plans….DIVIDE AND CONQUER

·        If one (or both) emergency substitute plans are used, please replenish as soon as you can so that you always have 2 emergency substitute plans available.
