A Reminder from the Office of Technology

In September, for all district employees, we implemented multi-factor authentication on our District's Microsoft @hilton.k12.ny.us accounts. As we continue to evaluate potential changes to increase our cybersecurity, we have determined that our next step is to implement multi-factor authentication on staff member Google accounts, @ga.hiltoncsd.net.

A quick walk through on how to set up this feature is here. Just as your Microsoft account multi-factor authentication is set-up, it will require a phone number for you to receive a code at by voice or text message. Alternatively, if you are logged into your Google ga.hiltoncsd.net account on an eligible phone, you may choose push notification Google prompts as your multi-factor authentication method. More on the Google prompts option can be seen here, including directions for both Apple and Android phones. Again, this method is an option but not required. You may choose to use the code by voice or text message method outlined above.

You may complete this process at any time leading up June 3. This feature will be active on Friday, June 3, 2022, for all employees. If you haven't gone through the process on your account outlined in the video prior to June 3, you will need to go through the process on June 3 when you access your Google account.

Last year, key executives from technology companies noted that multifactor authentication can help prevent 80 to 90 percent of cyberattacks (EdTech: Focus on K-12 article May 2022). Thank you for taking the necessary steps to help protect our district, and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.Kristy Shafer
Director of Technology and Data Protection Officer
