2018 Tunnel to Towers Rochester 5K Run & Walk

Good Morning Supporter!!

We are reaching out to you today because we need YOU!! Our event is just two weeks away and it cannot be successful without your help and dedication as in years past.

If you are planning on attending now is the time to register click here for details.

Volunteers: We need you to register so we have a head count and can plan the day accordingly. Registration for volunteers is FREE, unless you plan to run or walk in the 5K, then you need to register as a participant as well.

We are attempting to build TEAM 343, our tribute to the FDNY Firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. More information please email chouston@brockport.edu.

WE need Participants!! Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome to attend this event.

To attend, register or volunteer go to: https://www.crowdrise.com/T2TRochester2018

The Siller Cup is back! The FF team, in turnout (boots/Scott packs, optional) with the fastest time will win the cup! Which Fire Department will take home the cup this year? Will Spencerport Fire District defend their title or will another department strip it from them? Looking forward to this competition!!

The Siller Award is presented to the Fire Department with the largest participation. Brockport Fire Department is our reigning champ of this award, will they defend this title? Come on out and see!

As always THANK YOU for your support in assisting the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation build mortgage-free smart homes for our most catastrophically injured service members. These homes enable our most severely injured heroes’ live better, more independent lives.

More information on the foundation and its many programs to "just do good" please visit the website at https://tunnel2towers.org/

Yours in Service,

Time Off and Pay Cal

The best school in America begins in your work zone...

QUEST is going to be, and in many ways already is, the best school out there. That sound bold? Good, I'm glad. We are here for a purpose greater than our own, yet we are nothing more than the sum of all of us.

The culture of our school is shaped by the sub-cultures within our school:
-your level has a culture
-your department has a culture
-your pole has a culture
-your room, or office, has a culture

The sum of all of those cultures equals us: QUEST! If there is one thing I learned about QUEST last year, it is that it is a school that has a culture that is deeply rooted in doing right by kids. We work hard, disagree at times, but we always go back to doing right by kids. I love that.

As you begin a new year, consider your classroom culture. What can you do to intentionally create a space that is student-centered, and that has a positive impact on others? If we all do our part, kids will benefit...always!

George C.--the man, the myth, the legend--has some simple tips to start that classroom culture off right. If you don't have a classroom, there are several that you could easily apply to your environment as well. Enjoy, and enjoy the first week: where the tone we set and the way we teach impacts the rest of the year!

Day 1 Need-to-Knows

  • We will meet as a staff after the district welcome back for some updates and a few moments of inspiration. Time of this is TBD as last year we were way off as the union meeting went long. I'll make an announcement once people start returning, but am aiming for a meeting that is around 30ish minutes so that you can have the gift of time afterwards.
  • Start Tuesday, the building will no longer open at 6 am, but 6:30 am! Those early, early, early birds, please be mindful of not using your badge before it is open so that the alarm is not activated.
  • Please check the school calendar (our shared). You will notice I have added a bit to no meeting weeks. The purpose of this was due to the outcry and the stress during November and March.
  • Please be sure your level has assigned who is in charge of your bulletin board in the main hall. Some levels chose to have it as a rotation last year. This is a great way to celebrate the incredible work being done in classrooms.
  • Band students will not be leaving instruments in the hall this year--thanks for understanding. At 3:30 each day (during the first dismissal announcement), please send the students down to collect their instruments. They can head to their bus or to parent pickup from there--the hall will have someone supervising. In the am, if they brought one in they can drop it off on their way in--again, someone will be there to supervise. If you prefer not to have it in the auditorium because you have a designated place in your room, that is not a problem at all!
  • All those who are not assigned to a classroom, please be outside on the first few days in the am to support getting our youngest kids on the bus. We will also need some extra hands in the PM! Thanks for keeping our kids safe.! Teamwork!
  • Our tech. room was tidied up thanks to some staff members who gave up some time to get it ready for the year. In order to keep it as an orderly and ready-to-use place for classes, please be sure not to leave stuff out. The keys to the cupboards can be found in the main office (Hannah has them). Thanks for your help!
  • We will continue to use NaviGate this year for lockdown drills. Dawn placed new emergency cards in your classrooms: thanks Dawn!
  • This year we have a behavioral support person who will be taking over an office in the LSS hallway. To keep with our culture of "teaching the whole child," this is not going to be called the ISS room--I know many appreciate that name change. Our TA who will be working with our kids is Jamie Osborne. Because this is new, she will be working with me, Val, and Val's intern to create a system in the support room, as well as working to create reteaching lessons related to various behaviors that the office typically sees. Once we get things up and rolling, we will be sure to communicate out process and procedures. The goals: to be able to provide reteaching when students are assigned a consequence versus simply having to sit in the office; to be able for students to take a break in an area other than the main office so that it supports their learning and keeping the office clear for parent and other meetings; to be able to find ways to push-in with students who need the most support on days where she is available. One thing that is important to note is that all behavior should still come to the main office, and never directly to Jamie unless it is a previously agreed upon behavioral plan.  More to come as this gets moving. :)

Thanks

Thank you for the extra efforts, paying attention to the details, and being all-in for our kids. You all are exceptional, and I can't thank you enough for being a team, trusting one another, and keeping kids as the true north.

Enjoy your summer!

Summer

This summer, the blog will not be sent out weekly. There may be some changes made to it, but anything of importance will be emailed out--will try to email as little as possible. If there is a reason you need to be contacted directly, we will call you, so please make sure we have all your summer contact info.
