As our kids tackled the exam this week, I couldn't help but wonder about their ability to think and problem solve. It is crucial to teach content, but likely even more crucial to teach kids how to think so that they can apply content to new situations and problems. Above is a picture of the problem solving process we launched this summer filled out--thanks to Chris for this. I'd encourage you to review it and consider the ways in which your students are problem solvers.
Do they:
-Work to understand a problem?
-Are they able to make a plan?
Do they carry out a plan and look back?
-Can they fluidly adapt a plan or abort a plan when they find something is off?
-Do they check for reasonableness?
We have a charge to create thinkers, and I am grateful for all your efforts this year to ensure that our students are fluid problem solvers in math and in ALL areas. The process they take is equally, if not more, important than the end product, so continue to push thinking above all else. WE are QUEST!
