Hallway Meetings

Starting in April, please begin to have 1-2 hallway meetings each week. As a pole, decide which day(s). It is a good time to begin these again, and our school has a goal of adding back school-wide meetings in the near future. These meetings foster soft skills and align directly to our value of community.

State Testing

A modified schedule for testing is currently being created. This will be shared with you at some point next week. If you are in charge of administering the exams with students, please be sure you have watched Val's presentation.

Irish Stew...Yes Please!

 Irish stew

·        1 1/2 tbsp avocado oil

·        2 pounds boneless leg of lamb or beef stew meat, trimmed and cut into 1-inch cubes

·        sea salt

·        1 celeriac, peeled OR 4 red potatoes diced

·        3 turnips, peeled and diced

·        2 small zucchini, diced

·        3 medium carrots, peeled and cut into large chunks

·        1 yellow onion, diced

·        3 garlic cloves, minced

·        1 bay leaf

·        1 teaspoon black pepper

·        1 teaspoon thyme

·        2 teaspoons salt

·        ½ tsp pepper

·        1/3 cup tomato paste

·        3 cups beef stock

·        1 cup Guinness beer OR 1 additional cup beef stock

·        1 Tablespoon arrowroot or cornstarch OR 3 tbsp all-purpose flour (optional)

Heat large skillet over medium high heat. Dry beef or lamb and sprinkle with salt. In batches, brown the outside of the meat in the skillet. You do not want to cook the inside of meat. Place browned stew meat and all other ingredients, except the arrowroot or cornstarch, in a 6 quart crock pot. Stir to combine. Cover crockpot and cook on high for four hours or low 6-7 hours. Add arrowroot or cornstarch and cook for an additional hour. Meat should be very tender when finished

Weekly Update

Team,

Need-to-know:

  • Report Cards close at midnight tonight and go out to parents March 16th. A reminder that they are available will go to parents.
  • We will be looking to merge all classes into the café at lunchtime starting after April break. All lunches will be out of the lunchroom at that point.
  • We will be adding two screens and projectors into the cafeteria for meetings and larger group gatherings. If you ever have a level assembly and the aud. is not free, this will be an alternate space for us.
  • Three QUEST students shared at the recent BOE meeting. Kudos to them. They went through the SLED RACE and made connections to IB/Standards/STEM.
  • The kitchen has had some issues with students puncturing milk. Please reach out to Derek if you have heard any students mentioning this.

Keep-learning:

I receive messages called The Daily Stoic, and this one stuck with me as it made me think about the idea of walking in others' shoes. How easy is it to judge? How easy is it to resent others who hurt us? How easy is it to assume the worst in another person? Everyone is doing the best they can, with what they know and who they are...

We value community and caring, and I appreciate all of your efforts around seeing the good in others. It matters, and our building is meant for continued great things.

Going back to Socrates we have this idea that most people are doing the best they can, that almost nobody does the wrong thing on purpose. No, they believe what they think is correct, they’re doing what they think is right, what they think is what they’re capable of doing in the moment.

When we interviewed Dr. William Stixrud and Ned Johnson about their book, The Self-Driven Child, they paraphrase an idea from Dr. Ross Greene that’s worth committing to memory: people do well when they can.

People are usually acting with good intentions. So when people wrong you or frustrate you or their actions perplex you, remind yourself that you’re not seeing the whole picture. People have other stuff going on. They don’t have the tools and the resources and the education you have. They don’t have your same sense of good. They aren’t perfect. They can’t do the impossible, so, as Marcus said, you shouldn’t ask the impossible.

Understand this. Commit it to your memory. People do well when they can. Most people are doing the best they can.

QUEST Student Goals

State Testing (for those who administer the exams)

Hello,

It is that time of the year again for NYS State Tests! IF you receive this email you are most likely proctoring the NYS test – Rooms/assignments are coming soon. I created a proctor video for you to watch at a time that works best for you, instead of having a big meeting ( it is around 8 minutes). Please watch and let me know if you have any questions. When you pick up your tests you will be signing a piece of paper saying that you have watched this video and know the rules of proctoring – so please watch before the testing dates.

Weekly Update

 Team,

Need-to-Know:

  • No meeting weeks continue for two more weeks.
  • SIT is starting school-wide coffee hours on Friday am as a way to work toward our goal of remaining connected across the school. Consider additional ways you can connect with colleagues that you don't normally see or work with. Our students see this!
  • For placement this year (after spring break), we will continue to utilize the spreadsheet method versus traditional placement cards. This saves a ton of time from the office lens.
  • Thanks to those of you who put in a request to consider a different level. Any level staffing switches will be communicated prior to placement starting pending no unforeseen situations.

Chew-on-This:

How are you fostering discourse? Do these questions only need to be used for math? Don't forget, learning is a social process!
