Last weekly update of 2022!

 Team,

Enjoy Break

2022 was a fabulous year at QUEST, but 2023 is only going to get better. We are a family, and our school is a real gift to so many people. Thank you for putting your energy into your work. I'm beyond proud to be on this bus ride with you all.

Wishing you and your family a very wonderful holiday season. Be well!

From Tech: Student Printing

As part of the bigger work done around account automation, some students were having to use different ways to log in to the copiers to print. Josh did a ton of work, and now has one process for all students, outlined below. It is important to note that the ways students were logging in to the copiers prior do still work, this is just one streamlined way that now works for all students.

Students now have a consistent PIN code that each student can use to access their print jobs on copiers that they send from their GA account - s + 6-digit Person ID (padded with zeros in the front). For example, if their Person ID 5892, their pin for printing would be s005892.

If a student doesn't know their PersonID (for upper elementary grade levels it is usually part of their computer password), staff members can access a student's Person ID in Infinite Campus

Weekly Update

Team,

TEAMS

Being a human can be really messy. We are thinking/feeling beings, and day-to-day life in its current state is not always designed to meet our needs. We have a lot of input coming at us, whether that be through our smart phones, work demands, or the expectations within our home life! It can be tiring and our brains are not fully ready for the onslaught of input.

Take that idea, and then put people in teams to work collectively, and it can become tricky! I say this often, but our school culture is the sum of our teams. What we bring to our team (our energy, our unique gifts, our knowledge base), how we operate on a team, and our mindset about the value of collaboration are instrumental pieces of a positive culture.

Some notices:

  • I have witnessed a special area team revise, improve, revise again, and collaborate through a planner.
  • I've witnessed teams have some honest conversations and gut checking in order to make the team operate better.
  • I've noticed teams use stand-up meetings to quickly touch base, especially when they are working on opposite sides of the building.
  • I have witnessed teams take time to celebrate one another, notice the talents of one another, and leverage strengths.
  • I have seen teams learn about data and look at data together, in order to make informed decisions.
  • I have noticed teams of people working together to meet the needs of each child through a problem solving approach.
  • I've noticed teams take ownership over our school--be it through school improvement efforts, management efforts, or just extra-curriculars.
There is nothing more powerful than a collectivist mindset at work. We need one another, and our school does a remarkable job at focusing on our teams. Please know that I notice this and that I could not be more proud of how we live out our school value of collaboration. Kudos.

Sub Plans

At our last Management Team meeting, we discussed what is essential when there is a sub (that is, sub plans) in order for the sub to fully work with a class. In the future, everyone will be getting a common folder. Inside the folder will be a school map, emergency plans, a directory, and any other pertinent school-based materials.

More to come, but wanted to make sure all were aware that this was a task that Management Team looked at.

December 20th, staff breakfast!

If you have not signed up yet, I'd encourage you to consider joining us on December 20th. We could use a few more hot dishes!

From Jason

Many people have participated in previous years in the free online Ditch That Textbook Conference.  This year it runs from December 12th - January 6th.  Once singed up you can watch presentations on your own time.

Here's what it's all about it:

It’s called the Ditch That Textbook Digital Summit. There are nine video presentations from awesome presenters on topics related to tech and solid teaching and learning. Including previous years’ sessions, you’ll have access to more than 80 video presentations!

This year, it’s scheduled for December 12, 2022, to January 6, 2023.

Get registered for free at: DitchSummit.com.

HOW IT WORKS: New presentations are released every day. They remain available until the end of the summit so you can re-watch or catch up on any you’ve missed. They’re pre-recorded, so you can watch them whenever you want until the summit closes. After that, the summit ends and the videos are unavailable to watch anymore.

Weekly Update

 Team,

Inquiry at QUEST

Our QUEST learning community is diving deep, thanks to our School Improvement Team, into the topic of Inquiry.

When it comes to school-wide goals, the blog is one communication tool that our school uses to eschew confusion and to teach. For those that were not able to join us at the staff meeting, please check out the contents by clicking here!

Celebrations @ QUEST!

As an IB, PYP school, our charge is to have a culture, and to develop a culture, of international mindedness. What does this mean for how we approach celebrations?

QUESTions to chew on:

-In your learning space, do you discuss how celebrations look different around the world?

-What we see from a celebration is just the top of the iceberg (traditions, food, dances, songs...). How do we help students to see that values underpin each celebration?

-Do we only point out celebrations that we hold? Or do we help students connect, compare, and process the connection between one's cultural celebrations with those of others?

As we approach this holiday season, I am proud of the fact that I have witnessed some of these conversations. We have a charge to help our students to be internationally minded, and this starts with helping our learners see how people around the world celebrate at various times, and the role those celebrations play in their life.

TPT Update

At this time, access to the website Teachers Pay Teachers is still suspended by the District following an attempted ransomware attack through a download from the website. At this time, other districts in Monroe County as well as districts in surrounding counties and BOCES regions have also suspended use of the site.

As we have researched this situation, it is important to note that the following was found in the Teachers Pay Teachers Terms of Service under Item 8 "Limitation of Liability and Warranty." The direct quote from this document is below, with underline formatting added to the area relative to ransomware:

"We make no guarantees respecting the availability of the services, the security of the services at any particular time or from any particular location, the correction of any defects or errors, existence of any viruses or other harmful materials, or any other guarantees."

As shared in prior communications, we do not have a Data Privacy Agreement as required by New York Ed Law 2D on file with Teachers Pay Teachers. Staff and students were logging in to the site, sharing data while doing so. In addition, Teachers Pay Teachers also works with third party services, which may result in data shared to those services as well.

If you completed the form indicating you would like assistance in extracting your files, you will be contacted by email from a Technology Department staff member to set up a time (taken into account the availability you shared) to complete this process. We anticipate the process from start to finish can be completed within a half hour. Our goal through this process is to support impacted staff members by implementing a secure, safe process to help users retrieve saved files that are currently in individual Teachers Pay Teachers accounts.

Walkthroughs, Unannounced

Those teachers that have Derek as a supervisor, and are tenured, will receive an unannounced walkthrough sometime between January and March. I will be starting these after the break with the goal to complete all walkthroughs by the end of March.

QUEST Playbook, Mid-Year Review: How are we doing?

We have made great strides this year on our actions, as outlined on our QUEST Playbook. We will be hitting some more of the items as we move into 2023.

Some coming attractions:

  • Culture based principal challenges will be back in 2023!
  • Our MTSS team will be looking at school-wide data after the January assessments!
  • SIT's Tier 1 focus is Inquiry. We will continue to hit inquiry from different angles as a school community.
  • Teams will continue to have some time for team development and unpacking the profiles, through a continuum approach, at level meetings!

Phone Voicemail

Subject: Voicemail Change over notice – Action Required

To All Employees with a Voicemail Box,

Our current Voicemail system is no longer supported by the vendor. As a result, and to continue receiving support, we need to migrate to another supported solution.

Relcom (our phone provider) is performing all work necessary for this migration.

On Thursday, December 22nd, the district will be moving over to a new voicemail system.

Any new or saved messages you have in your current mailbox will NOT be moved over to the new voicemail system. You will also be required to setup your voice mailbox prior to cut over on the 22nd of December.

Prior to Thursday before break, please document all important new or saved messages. This should be done by 4 pm on Thursday, December 22nd.

Starting on Monday, December 5th, your new voice mailbox will be available to set up. A temporary password is used to access your mailbox initially, this temporary password is the same as your mailbox number.

You will then have to follow all the steps to properly set up your new voicemailbox.

A training document is attached that provides step by step instructions in setting up your new voicemail.

If you are in a room with a shared phone and mailboxes, you will receive a separate email with additional instructions.

Weekly Update

 Team,

December Caring... & Some Notices

Our IB Profile focus for the month is caring!

December, despite all its magic, can be an overwhelming month. For some it may be a time of celebration and tradition, while others view it as a reminder of loss. This applies to both adults and the students that enter through our doors each morning.

I challenge you to find the joy in this month, but to also spend a lot of time noticing. Which child might need a high-five, a word of encouragement, or some additional support? Any colleagues that could use the same? Being there for others is one of the greatest gifts we can give to others...and to ourselves!

With that, it has been a wonderful week at the Q-town learning factory. Throughout my voyage, I have been able to notice:

  • Students owning math talk moves, thanks to the intentionality (word of the year) by the teacher!
  • A team focused on how to ensure their celebrations planner is done with an equity focus!
  • A clerical team jumping in for others!
  • A couple colleagues going above and beyond to ensure a colleagues classroom is ready to roll for kids!
  • A special area department demonstrating great collaboration.
  • A health office creating holiday magic for our kids!
  • A reading team brainstorming how to creatively service kids!
  • Students using the new floor decals to get in some movement and coordination work.
  • A team of 8 rocking the RtI problem solving in order to support their student! Our value of collaboration was on full display.

Lockdown Drill on December 20th

Our next lockdown drill will be December 20th at 10 am. Please use Navigate to communicate your attendance. Please mark your calendars!

Holiday Decoration Reminders

Please share with building staff.

“Tis the season for holiday decorations and lights. Just a few quick reminders so we stay in compliance with life and safety codes in our buildings this holiday season.

  • Inside exterior windows and doors: Remember there cannot be anything taped to the windows and no painting on these due to the security window film.
  • Do not hang anything from ceilings or lights.
  • Walls in corridors cannot exceed 25% of decorations.
  • Walls in classrooms cannot exceed 50% of decorations.
  • 3D decorations are not approved.
  • Christmas lights must be UL approved. (Please remove these prior to leaving for the Holiday break on December 23rd.)
  • You cannot plug multiple light strings into one another and you cannot plug lights into extension cords or power strips.

Custodial staff will have to remove any of the above if that is the case.

There are many ways to decorate and be in compliance to keep our buildings safe for staff and student and have everything look festive at the same time.

If you have any issues or questions please let me know.

Thanks,

Jeff

MAP Windows

As a school, we are trying to tighten our testing window for our MAP assessments. Doing so allows us to make most use of the results and to be responsive, through our MTSS team, to what that data is telling us about our learners.

Below is a calendar for when the winter MAP assessments should be administered. Tech support (Jess, Jason) would be around to support you during these windows. K-2 classroom teachers will have Jess visit a future meeting to discuss process.

If your class needs to go longer than the week you are scheduled, that is okay; however, please do your best to ensure it is completed by February break (with the goal being to start when it is listed).

Weekly Update

Team,

Gratitude

It was a great week to be a student at QUEST Elementary. Lots of awesome notices that place kids, and our collaboration, first. As you head into Thanksgiving break, take time for you. Feet up, make sure you have a full belly (I always recommend wearing stretchable clothing on 11/24), and enjoy the moments with your family, friends, and loved ones.

Thank you for an awesome start to the year. I am grateful to lead such a dynamic group of humans.

Feast at QUEST

Feast is a long held tradition, with plenty of stories and memories that have transcended time. As we tackle this day, consider why we do it. Below is a snippet from a document that we created a few years back regarding our traditions and their purpose.

We Keep our Commitments: Reminder

From Tech

Good morning. As you are aware, the District has recently suspended access to the Teachers Pay Teachers website on district devices due to an attempted ransomware attack from a downloaded resource on the Teachers Pay Teachers website. Since we recognize that some individuals utilize this site to support their instruction, our goal is to support impacted staff members by developing a secure, safe process to help users retrieve saved files that are currently in individual Teachers Pay Teachers accounts. Our next step is to determine the scope of users and resources this plan would involve.

If you have resources you would like to retrieve from your Teachers Pay Teachers account, please complete the form here no later than the end of the workday on Tuesday, November 22.

We will use the information gathered to finalize a plan and communicate with those users who completed the form. This communication will include the next steps to obtain any files that can be downloaded from individuals' Teachers Pay Teachers accounts. This process will occur with the support of a member from the Technology Department.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work on this process.

Computer Based Testing

Background Information

In June 2022 New York State Education Department issued a memo on Statewide Implementation of Computer-based Testing (CBT). The full memo can be found here. The state is requiring a transition to computer-based testing for all 3-8 assessments including ELA, Math, Science, and NYSESLAT assessments by Spring of 2026. The timeline below represents the minimum requirements for administering CBT over the next four years.

*The implementation of required computer-based testing for the NYSESLAT and NYSITELL is scheduled to begin in Spring of 2024 for grades 2-12. Grades K-1 will remain paper based.

Hilton’s Action Plan

The Hilton School District will transition to computer-based testing in grades 3-8 in ELA, Math, Science, NYSITELL, and NYSESLAT assessments in Spring of 2024.

Over the course of the 2022-2023 school year, the Office of Instruction will work with the Technology and Data departments to train and develop systems for CBT implementation. Ongoing updates will be provided as they are available.

Rationale

The state’s requirement that grades 5 and 8 must use Computer-based Testing in Spring of 2024 would mean that the elementary schools and Merton Williams would administer assessments in both paper and computer-based formats for two years. Simultaneously administering two different formats of assessments would create a burden on resources and individuals’ time, which can be avoided by moving all assessments in the sam

Elementary Learning Loss Support - Deadline to Express Interest: 11/21/22

Each of our elementary schools in the district is looking to provide Learning Loss Support for small groups of students to address gaps students have developed due to the pandemic. This means:

  • Teachers involved will work with small groups of students

  • No more than six students in a group

  • Open to students in grades 4-6

  • Small group, targeted intervention

  • Groups will meet 2-3 times per week

  • Groups will meet before or after school

  • Student participation based on identified academic needs/gaps and teacher recommendation

  • Could focus on ELA or Math

  • Teachers will be compensated:

    • At the professional rate for time spent providing direct services to students

    • At the curriculum rate for ½ hour of planning per hour of instruction

  • Teachers will be responsible for planning, delivering, and progress-monitoring interventions to determine the achievement of student learning goals

  • At the end of the first 8-week period, we will evaluate and determine if we will continue to run additional rounds of support.

Once we are able to identify teachers, principals will work with teachers' availability to develop a schedule, identify students, and confirm participation with parent/guardians.

To express interest, please email Derek by the end of the day on 11/21/22.

Vetted Resources and Teachers Pay Teachers

During the week of October 31, a cybersecurity filter used on staff computers detected a malicious file downloaded on a staff member's computer. The program alerted Technology Department staff, flagging it as ransomware, and stopped further activity. During the Technology Department's work on the situation, it was determined that this file was part of the download of a Teachers Pay Teachers resource.

In order to have time to better analyze the situation, investigate further details, and consult with cybersecurity experts on potential next steps, Teachers Pay Teachers was blocked and still is at this time. We are working to determine how we can safely allow users to retrieve resources from the site while also not opening up the risk of another potentially malicious download from the site. We recognize that many users have resources they utilize on the site but need to be sure that we don't put district technology resources at risk while moving forward with plans. As you may have seen in the news both locally and nationally in recent years, ransomware can have far reaching impacts on a school district.

Lastly, in analyzing this situation, we have come to learn that student accounts have also been accessing Teachers Pay Teachers.  At this time, we do not have an ED Law 2D compliance agreement with this company and have blocked this site for students as well.

As more information is available, we will reach out and share that information. Thank you for your patience as we continue to find a secure resolution.

Weekly Updates

Team,

Open-Mindedness: an IB Profile for all of us to aim for!

Our charge as an IB school is to live the IB Profiles. The profiles are not just for students, and making these our own aim supports an incredible culture.

Open-mindedness goes hand-and-hand with empathy. Hearing others, considering new ideas, walking in their shoes, and being mindful in our conversations regarding our own bias are all interwoven to form open-mindedness. Being open-minded is quite hard, but it is a profile worth aiming for!

CAUGHT THROWING FISH

It was great seeing so many shout-outs this week. When I started at Q-town, we all read the book FISH. Although this was meant to be a jump start and to get us all focused on building our school community, the four practices speak to culture: being there, having fun, finding the good, making others' day. The shout out section is reserved for sharing positives and an attitude of gratitude. In the spirit or gratitude, I challenge you to find some positives to share each week. Send them directly to Derek or Paula and we will add to the blog for you.

We are a culture that values care. Keep them coming, and awesome work with the shout-outs this week!

8:55 Start on Wednesdays

Wednesday 8:55 start can be a grind for some of us, especially getting a class full of students to the aud. When I am out for bus duty I will move kids right along to their classrooms upon the 8:40 arrival so they are ready in 15 minutes, however, please know it is okay to take lunch count and attendance right after the morning meeting. This little switch might help!
